Наведу витяг з праці Макса Вакуленка під назвою “KyivNotKiev: Linguistic ignorance or an anti-Ukrainian attack?”:
Recently, some Ukrainian institutions have launched the campaign «#KyivNotKiev». As a professional doing research in transliteration since 1993, I have to comment on this.
The form Kiev is an English and Romance exonym for the name of the Ukrainiancapital city. It corresponds to the Hellenic Κίεβο and Old English Kiou, Kiow, Kiew, Kioviathat originate from the Old Ukrainian name Кыѥвъ. The modern Russian exonym Киев also originates from this form. Therefore, the exonym Kiev arose from the Old Ukrainian form, not from modern Russian.
